India conducted three nuclear tests on 11th May, 1988 and yet another two similar tests on the 13th of the month. All these tests were made in the Pokhran range Rajasthan. The tests were conducted on 24th anniversary of the first nuclear explosion in Pokhran which was also carried out on the same Buddha Purnima day in 1974. The tests conducted were with three devices - fission device, a low-yield device and a thermo-nuclear device. The Indian scientist A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was the mastermind in the tests. With these India became the sixth country in the world successfully to carry out a thermo nuclear explosion. This has placed India on a par with the five nuclear weapons powers of the world. Plane Crash in Patna
A serious plane crash occurred at 7-30 a.m. on July 7, 2000 last at Chitkohra near Patna. The accident took place when the air Boeing CD 7412 on Kolkata-Patna-Lucknow-Delhi airlines crashed on two houses on the outskirts of the city of Patna. The plane caught fire the moment it struck the houses. Fifty-one of the fifty passengers on board were killed along with the four people on the ground. Seven people survived but were seriously injured. The bodies of those killed were charred beyond recognition. Many people were still trapped under the wreckage. Rescue work was started on a war-footing. Over 300 army personnel were pressed into service. They along with the Red Cross volunteers had extricated the bodies from the debris. The cause of the crash wan unknown. The government ordered an investigation into the accident.
